Process Safety are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators. 

 

As a Process Safety Specialist, you will act as a core member of our technical assurance team, responsible for developing, implementing, and assuring robust process safety risk management across assets, projects, and operational activities.

 

You will provide expert guidance and supportive oversight to ensure major accident hazards are clearly identified, risks are reduced to ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable), and that all process safety arrangements comply with legal, regulatory, and company standards.

 

This role is critical in preventing Major Accident Events (MAEs) through strengthening hazard identification, effective barrier management, and embedding learning from incidents across the organisation.

 

 

Where you fit in:

 

You will operate as a key member of the process safety and engineering community, working across multidisciplinary teams and interfacing with operations, maintenance, capital delivery, and HSE functions at all levels.

 

In this role, you will:

 

  • Provide subject matter expertise and authoritative advice to operational teams, engineering projects, and senior leadership.
  • Assure high quality facilitation of hazard identification and risk assessment activities (e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie, LOPA, FMEA, FTA etc.).
  • Deliver objective assurance that process safety risks are effectively identified, assessed, and controlled.
  • Support the identification and management of safety critical elements and process safety barriers, including performance standards and verification activities.
  • Provide technical input across the full asset lifecycle, from design and construction through to operations, modification, and decommissioning.
  • Act as a key advisor within Management of Change (MoC) processes to ensure risks introduced by change are properly understood and mitigated.
  • Facilitate or support investigations into process safety incidents and ensure learning is embedded to drive continuous improvement.
  • Support regulatory compliance activities, audits, and inspections, ensuring adherence to relevant legislation including COMAH, DSEAR, PUWER, COSHH, and HSE guidance.
  • Evaluate hot work risk assessments where related to flammable atmospheres and confined spaces.
  • Mentor and coach colleagues, supporting the development of process safety capability across the organisation.

 

What skills & qualifications you will need:

 

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) with a relevant professional body.
  • Significant experience (5+ years) in process safety management within a high-hazard or regulated industry (e.g. energy, chemicals, water, or manufacturing).
  • Experience in Project Management, ideally for consultants.
  • Strong working knowledge of major accident hazard management, including structured hazard studies and barrier management.
  • Proven ability to lead or facilitate risk assessments such as HAZID, HAZOP, Bowtie, or LOPA.
  • Ability to provide confident, independent, and constructive challenge at all organisational levels.
  • Strong analytical thinking with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience reviewing and assuring risk assessments to ensure controls remain effective throughout the asset lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated commitment to process safety culture, continuous improvement, and learning from incidents.

 

You will also benefit from having:

 

  • Formal training in HAZOP leadership, LOPA, or advanced risk assessment techniques.
  • Experience working in or supporting COMAH-regulated sites.
  • Knowledge of asset integrity management, preventative maintenance, and safety critical element assurance.
  • Experience supporting or authoring safety cases, safety reports, or equivalent technical documentation.
  • Experience leading audits, assurance activities, or regulatory interactions.
