You’ll be part of a planned rota that cover evenings, weekends and bank holidays as normal operational hours. The good news is it’s all planned, so you’ll know where you stand and can plan your time around it.

What we do:

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Process & Pumping are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

Where you fit in:

As a Process Operator, you’ll be part of a hardworking operational team out on site, making sure everything runs as it should and meets the regulatory compliance we’re held to, while protecting our environment from pollution and maintaining a great service for our customers.

It’s a hands-on job where no two days are quite the same. You’ll spend a lot of your time working outdoors, come rain or shine, getting involved in practical tasks and keeping our sites in good working order.

From reacting to alarms to checking equipment and tackling issues head-on, you’ll be helping protect the environment and deliver a reliable service to our customers.

Health and safety is a big deal for us, and we’ll expect you to take real pride in looking after yourself and your teammates whilst getting the job done properly. Alongside that, there’ll be general site upkeep — things like grounds maintenance, basic repairs, and keeping everything clean, safe, and tidy.

It’s practical work — ideal for someone who enjoys being active, solving problems, and working outdoors.

Your duties will include tasks such as:

  • Responding to RTS alarms and pollution incidents
  • Gathering evidence at suspected pollution incidents
  • Lifting, checking, and unblocking pumps
  • Taking samples, examining the results, and trouble-shooting any issues impacting sample results
  • Raising follow-on work for internal support services

What skills, experience and training you will need:

We’ll give you all the training you need to carry out the role safely and with confidence. You’ll also be provided with a company van, tools, equipment, Toughbook, mobile phone, sat nav, and full workwear including PPE.

To thrive in this role, you’ll need:

  • A practical, hands-on mindset and a willingness to work outdoors in all weathers.
A good level of resilience — it’s not always easy work, but it’s rewarding.
  • The ability to work both on your own and as part of a team.
  • Good time management to plan your day and manage your workload.
  • Confidence to speak up if something doesn’t look safe.
  • A steady, problem-solving approach and a positive attitude.

  • You’ll also need:
Basic IT skills, as you’ll be recording information on a Toughbook
  • A full UK driving licence (with no more than 6 points), as you’ll be travelling between sites

You will also benefit from having:

  • Previous knowledge or experience of wastewater operations (though not essential — we’ll teach you what you need to know).

Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we do our best to support flexible working and work-life balance wherever we can. We know life outside of work matters too, whether that’s family commitments or simply making the most of your time off.

Do we sound like your cup of tea?

If you enjoy practical, outdoor work, don’t mind getting your hands dirty, and want to play your part in looking after Yorkshire’s environment and communities, we’d love to hear from you. Apply today and see where a career with Yorkshire Water could take you.
