What we do:

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Bioresources are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

Where you fit in:

Yorkshire Water treats and recycles around 350,000 tonnes of sewage sludge each year, mostly as treated biosolids to agriculture.  The Recycling Optimiser role is intrinsic in ensuring that the processes used to treat the biosolids are compliant with all legislation, assurance schemes, and internal process.

The Recycling Optimiser is responsible for reporting on the process metrics and supports where any mitigation is required.

The Recycling Optimiser also supports the Recycling Manager to ensure that the recycling of material is done compliantly and efficiently, planning exports to meet site stocks requirements and customer needs, working with colleagues to ensure that site processes are not restricted by site stocks.  The Recycling Optimiser also produces and shares weekly, monthly and annual reports for colleagues, Environment Agency and Ofwat, and takes part or leads in audits.

As a Recycling Optimiser you will

  • Drive excellent standards and performance in health and safety, risk management and control of work and ensure compliance with the YW Safety Policy and internal compliance procedures.
  • Champion and promote compliance with environmental legislation, permits and best practice.
  • Support the Recycling Manager in coordinating a consistent approach and level of performance across our sites.
  • Challenge contract partners to deliver excellent Health & Safety and environmental compliance. Ensure all sludge data required from partners is available in a timely, consistent, and accurate manner, and produce performance reports for use at site and region wide level and to inform the Bioresources management team.
  • Provide sludge treatment and recycling volume forecasts to contract partners and YW.
  • Promote positive relationships with EA and EHO officers and ensure sludge operations do not create environmental nuisance.
  • Liaise with strategically important customers to ensure we maintain a sustainable recycling operation.
  • Provide information and commentary for OFWAT and EA regulatory reporting requirements.  Lead and participate in regulatory audits.

  • Understanding of sludge treatment and sludge recycling processes.
  • Experience of operational site management.
  • Develop and maintain effective internal and external relationships.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise but remain flexible – this can be a reactive environment.
  • Experience of supporting and embedding change, able to influence and drive the right culture and behaviours.
  • Clearly demonstrate the Yorkshire Water company values and behaviours.
  • Experience of understanding where your role fits within a business plan and then developing ways to deliver the outputs.
  • Full valid UK driving licence (No more than 6 points)
