Location: We have an opportunity for a Trade Effluent Sampling Team Leader to join the Asset Management (waste) department at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. Could this be you? The role will offer a flexible hybrid working arrangement, however, there will be an expectation an element of your time will be spent working at the site where you will be based in Bradford and visiting different sites across the Yorkshire region.  A full UK driving license (with no more than 6 points) is an essential requirement of this role, with the ability to travel between sites.

 

Work type: Permanent. 37 hours per week, Monday – Friday within a standard working window.

Asset Management (Waste) are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators. 

 

The Trade Effluent Sampling Team Leader leads a team of up to seven Trade Effluent Sampling Officers in monitoring trade effluent discharges across the Yorkshire Region to ensure compliance with Consent parameters, protect company assets and the environment, and identify opportunities for income generation. The Team Leader is responsible for the effective resourcing of sampling programs in accordance with company policy, gathering evidence to facilitate formal enforcement action when necessary, and providing support to operational teams to mitigate risks and work with the team to address issues of non-compliance and health and safety. Additionally, the Team Leader is tasked with developing technical solutions to monitor and address high-risk trader activities and non-consented discharges through intelligence gathering methods.

As our Trade Effluent Sampling Team Leader, you will:

 

  • Provide Line Management and leadership to direct reports to drive performance excellence in line with statute, IMS and identified performance goals.
  • Drive excellent standards and performance in health and safety in line with YW policies to minimise risk of accidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses, LTIs and HiPro incidents.
  • Conduct H&S Audits; take decisive action to address identified issues or those raised in Team to positive conclusion.
  • Deliver the Trade Effluent pre-scheduled sampling programme to achieve the defined compliance targets via effective resourcing and training of Sampling Officers.
  • Management of team vans, sampling equipment, mobile plant, and proactive monitoring equipment to facilitate effective resource and equipment deployment.
  • Identify and develop proactive investigative opportunities to secure credible intelligence on Trader activity and design protocols to capture corroborative evidence for enforcement cases.
  • Apply technical knowledge to identify and secure opportunities to build effective working relationships with key stakeholders to develop new methodologies for securing further evidence and scope from sampling projects and research, whilst challenging ways of working and improving service delivery from analytical sampling providers.
  • Identify gaps in Trade Effluent policy or procedures to facilitate new ways of working or cement current offerings, with a view to establishing new IMS documents or improving on current iterations.
  • Support the Sampling Officers in producing witness statements and evidential bundles for enforcement cases and criminal proceedings.
  • Provide operational support and technical expertise to Wastewater incident management relating to pollution events and/or STW compliance risk or failures.
  • Deliver technical sampling training to Wastewater colleagues associated with high-risk assets.
  • Act as technical and operational Trade Effluent representative for pollution events or safety incidents relating to Trade Effluent monitoring equipment when escalated via the Duty Manager, to effectively manage resource deployment, intelligence/evidence gathering and cascade relevant safety information to team.
  • Review and assess all sampling data to provide a clear quality assurance mechanism for accurate data gathering and reporting, whilst challenging processes to improve audit compliance and maximise use of data and value to team.
  • Support the response to the relevant stakeholder bodies e.g. EA, OFWAT, UKAS and Local Authorities.

 

What skills, experience, and qualifications you will need:

 

  • Experienced customer focused, people leader with proven success in managing field-based teams, in a busy operations environment, be able to demonstrate a track record of developing teams and individuals in achieving excellent performance against challenging targets and meeting business objectives.
  • Experience of Health and Safety management processes and systems and excellent knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety standards (preferably IOSH qualified).
  • You will have rigorous attention to detail and be a good communicator, be able to challenge effectively with excellent Influencing and negotiation skills, whilst also having the ability to build and maintain a network of working relationships both internally and externally.
  • You will be proficient in the use of IT and have in-depth knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Travel is required across Yorkshire as part of this role; therefore, a full valid UK driving licence is required (No more than 6 points).

 

You will also benefit from having:

  • Academic, risk or compliance background or experience gained in environmental, chemistry, science, or regulatory enforcement sectors.
  • Previous experience gained within the broader utilities, Wastewater or Trade Effluent sectors.
  • Application of knowledge and practical experience of regulatory sampling
  • Data analysis, reporting and presentation.
  • Experience of stakeholder management and conflict resolution
