Our Engineering Design Team sits at the heart of our capital programme. We lead the technical definition, governance and design of projects across water, wastewater, bioresources, nature based solutions, networks, treatment and beyond.

 

We are building a Design Authority and engineering centre of excellence that will set the standard for how Yorkshire Water designs and delivers infrastructure.

 

Where you fit in: 

 

We’re seeking an experienced Senior Engineer to serve as the technical design lead for major projects in Yorkshire Water’s Capital Delivery Programme. In this role, you will oversee the end-to-end design of water and wastewater projects from initial concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and final handover. As a key member of our Engineering Design Team, you will coordinate multiple engineering disciplines (civil, mechanical, electrical, process, and ICA) to deliver innovative, efficient, and sustainable engineering solutions. This is a fantastic opportunity to apply your expertise on projects that safeguard public health, protect the environment, and secure essential water services for current and future generations. 

 

  • Provide expert technical leadership and direction to multi-disciplinary design teams, ensuring designs are fully integrated across civil, mechanical, electrical, and process elements. Act as the technical authority and subject matter expert for project design decisions. 
  • Plan, manage, and coordinate the complete design process for complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects – from project definition and feasibility through detailed design, construction, and commissioning. Ensure all designs adhere to Yorkshire Water’s engineering standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Serve as the project’s Technical Design Lead, ensuring compliance with CDM regulations, environmental standards etc. Oversee design reviews, risk assessments, and engineering assurance processes to deliver safe, effective solutions. 
  • Work closely with project managers, delivery partners, design consultants, contractors, and operations teams to ensure seamless, collaborative project delivery. Liaise with suppliers and procurement staff on technical specifications, promoting standardised designs and Design for
  • Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) where appropriate. 
  • Control design budgets and drive cost-effective, Totex-focused solutions that optimise whole-life costs and asset performance. Ensure projects stay on schedule and deliver value for money, meeting key performance targets without compromising quality. 
  • Champion innovation, sustainability, and engineering excellence in all design activities. Identify opportunities to improve design processes, adopt new technologies, and implement creative solutions to complex engineering challenges – from upgrading existing assets to deploying low-carbon, nature-based designs. 
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and safety-first mindset. Lead by example to instil high standards of quality, health & safety, and environmental stewardship across the team.

 

What skills & qualifications you will need: 

 

  • A degree in a relevant engineering discipline e.g. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical/Process Engineering 
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (ICE, IMechE, IET, IChemE, CIWEM, or equivalent). 
  • Significant experience in the end-to-end design and delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure projects, encompassing both clean water supply and wastewater treatment systems. You should have a deep understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes and the challenges of designing and upgrading these facilities. 
  • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multi-discipline engineering designs for complex projects, with experience guiding designs from concept through detailed engineering and construction. Familiarity with UK design standards and regulations is expected. 
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, with a track record of integrating safety and environmental compliance into the design process. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience leading technical teams and collaborating across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Able to translate complex engineering concepts into clear, actionable information for colleagues and partners. 
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills in a complex engineering context, with the creativity to drive innovative solutions and optimise designs for performance, cost, and sustainability. 
  • Full UK Driving Licence and the flexibility to visit operational sites and partner offices across the Yorkshire region as needed. 

 

You will also benefit from having: 

 

  • Project management certifications and experience managing project lifecycles or using project management tools.
  • Experience in a regulated utility and large capital delivery environment, particularly within the UK water industry, which includes working with industry regulators and understanding AMP frameworks. 
  • Exposure to innovative design practices and a commitment to sustainable, low-carbon design solutions that improve efficiency and environmental outcomes. 
  • Understanding of Totex principles and experience incorporating whole-life costing into design and engineering decisions. 
  • Strong skills in engaging with external design consultants, contractors, and multi-disciplinary teams, with an ability to build productive partnerships and drive consensus on technical solutions.
