What we do!

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

The sustainable management of water resources is central to our water resources strategy. The impacts of climate change, population growth and the need to protect the environment require us to take action to ensure resilient water supplies in the long-term. To meet these challenges, Yorkshire Water is undertaking a significant programme of water resource and environmental projects spanning our Water Resources Management Plan, Drought Plan, Strategic Resource Options and Water Industry National Environment Programme commitments.

Where you fit in!

As an Environmental Specialist you will support a range of environmental projects within the strategic water resources function at Yorkshire Water, with a focus on sustainable water resources management. This will include appraising the sustainability of our existing water sources (rivers, reservoirs and groundwater) as well as the feasibility of new sources. Depending on your qualifications and interests, there will also be opportunities to get involved with a range of other projects/initiatives including drought planning, hydro-ecology and environmental monitoring, partnership work, abstraction licence renewals and operational environmental compliance.

The role will involve working with various internal and external stakeholders to help shape the future of Yorkshire Water’s long-term water resources strategy, developing a best value plan for customers and the environment.

You will:

•    Coordinate the environmental components of various environmental workstreams including WINEP studies, project/plan-level assessments and other strategic projects/research in support of the strategic water resources function.

•    Work alongside Yorkshire Water colleagues and our strategic planning partners to ensure a joined-up approach to environmental assessment across the WINEP, WRMP, DP and SRO programmes.

•    Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with regulators and external stakeholders.

•    Review/QA technical documents and contribute to/author Yorkshire Water reports.

•    Organise and/or supervise environmental surveys/site visits.

•    Collate and manage environmental data sources/evidence.

What skills and qualifications you will need:

•    Hold a degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Environmental Science, Geography, Hydrology, Environmental Impact Assessment) preferably with postgraduate qualifications.

•    Experience of working within the environmental science/assessment/planning sector (water industry or utilities experience desirable but not essential).

•    Experience of environmental assessment.

•    Working knowledge of environmental/planning legislation and ability to interpret and articulate business implications.

•    Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player with excellent organisational skills.

•    Ability to work within and across multi-disciplinary teams.

•    Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

•    Able to develop and maintain effective internal and external relationships.

The role will involve travel to different sites across Yorkshire, therefore you will need a UK driving licence with no more than 6 points.

We embrace a flexible working model, where our hybrid setup typically requires an average of at least 1 day in the office per week. This could be slightly more when collaborative efforts, training or meeting deadlines demand it. For those who prefer to work on-site, our office is open Monday-Friday during working hours.
