What we do!
Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.
We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.
New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Environment and River Health are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.
The need to report our environmental data is increasing through regulatory reports and through our ongoing drive to be a more transparent company.
This role will be critical to ensuring processes are in place and followed to deliver accurate reports and data sets to our regulatory bodies and to our customers on all wastewater environmental performance areas.
The role requires strong technical understanding of our licensing / environmental permitting requirements and regulatory requirements and you will be the primary point of contact for annual and incident reporting to the Environmental Agency (EA), and will work closely with them to maintain a strong relationship.
Where you fit in!
As our Environmental Reporting Specialist you will:
• Analyse and interpret environmental performance data across key compliance areas, including pollution incidents, EDM (storm and emergency discharges), PFF, UMon, DWF and wastewater treatment works compliance.
• Prepare and submit high‑quality regulatory reports and datasets to the Environment Agency, DEFRA and Ofwat, covering areas such as pollution, EDM, bathing waters, flow and treatment works compliance.
• Play a key role in audits and assurance, supporting internal and external audit requirements (including APR) and ensuring the accuracy, robustness and auditability of regulatory submissions.
• Develop and submit regulatory challenge documents, using investigation evidence to challenge reported failures relating to pollution, flow, discharges and compliance where appropriate.
• Act as a centre of excellence for environmental reporting, owning processes, driving consistency across the business, monitoring performance and continually improving reporting standards.
• Provide timely, insightful performance data to technical and operational teams, supporting informed decision‑making and improved environmental outcomes.
• Work closely with River Health, Operations, The Academy and technical teams, leading workshops, supporting investigations, and delivering training to raise operational awareness of flow, spill and compliance requirements.
• Undertake investigations and support operational improvement, including desktop and site‑based reviews, asset optimisation activities, and technical guidance to reduce storm overflow discharges and improve flow compliance.
What skills & qualifications you will need:
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly and confidently convey complex environmental and regulatory information both verbally and in writing.
• Experience working within wastewater operations, with a sound understanding of treatment processes and operational impacts on environmental compliance.
• Proven experience operating within a regulated environment, demonstrating a strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements.
• Strong stakeholder management and influencing capability, comfortable working collaboratively across multiple levels of the business and with external partners.
• Ability to manage competing priorities effectively, working flexibly as part of a team while also taking initiative and ownership of work in a fast‑paced environment.
• Demonstrated capability in developing, embedding and improving processes and procedures, with a continuous improvement mindset.
• Strong environmental compliance knowledge and passion, with the ability to coach and support colleagues to improve awareness and performance.
• Highly diligent and detail‑focused, able to maintain accuracy while keeping sight of wider environmental and business objectives.
Although we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it’s important to us that we support flexible working patterns and job share options (when we can), to help you make the best of both your work and home life. We know that juggling childcare responsibilities or getting that ideal work/life balance isn’t always easy!
