We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Lead Advisor to join the Asset Strategy & Policy Team at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. Could this be you?

We are a small close knit team of nine, who make the time to regularly collaborate in person. Working as part of the wider Asset Strategy and Policy function we are responsible for influencing and negotiating with regulators and stakeholders to enable sustainable environmental improvements. You will develop skills and knowledge in a wide range of topics but also have the opportunity to specialise. The role is varied and interesting with no two days being the same.

We embrace a flexible working model, where our hybrid setup typically requires an average of 2 day in the office site per week. This could be slightly more when collaborative efforts, training or meeting deadlines demand it. For those who prefer to work on-site, our office is open Monday-Friday during working hours.


Where you fit in:

As our Lead Environmental Advisor you will provide expert advice to the business on matters concerning environmental regulation, permitting and modelling.
You will ensure resolution of regulatory issues/risks by effectively influencing negotiations with the Environment Agency (EA) nationally and regionally on current and future environmental legislation and regulatory interpretation that impact on permitted and licenced activities.


You will also develop and maintain an understanding of the impact of Company activities on the environment and support the business in developing responses, accordingly, e.g. review all the water service discharges or abstraction licences to ensure Yorkshire Water has the correct regulatory permissions in place (exemptions / permits/ licences).

You will provide advice to the business on the impact of new, changed and existing environmental legislation, where a precedent does not already exist. e.g. the proposed move from water resources licences to environmental permits. You will then work with the EA and internal colleagues to establish the requirements e.g. permit conditions and applicability to abstraction activities.

You will lead on environmental investigations, including management of one or more teams of external specialist consultants.

You will also help lead the development of the quality programme aspect of Asset Management Plan submissions, e.g. using knowledge of future regulatory change to advise the business on timescales and costs for implementing change in the new AMP programme.

What skills & qualifications you will need:

The successful candidate will have –

•    Good knowledge of the main functions of the water industry and relevant regulators and understanding of all relevant pieces of environmental legislation related to the water industry.
•    Excellent understanding of the various environmental permissions required by the business.
•    Excellent understanding of licences for abstraction and impoundment
•    Excellent understanding of environmental permitting for water discharges, waste operations, bespoke and standard rules permits.
•    Good understanding of environmental science, particularly related to water industry.
•    Ability to define and document investigation scope, including any monitoring requirements (as required by specialism).
•    Good understanding of the legislative framework of European Union and its impact in the environmental obligations of the water industry.
•    Full understanding of the key environmental guidance and regulatory approaches adopted by the environmental regulator in regard to the company’s activities.
•    Ability to build, maintain and embed improved business processes in own area of work.
•    Numerate with the ability to analyse and interpret complex data.
•    Ability to work with other teams, whilst understanding differing priorities. 
•    Ability to coach and mentor others on technical issues and leadership skills.
•    Strong written and oral communication, e.g. complex technical reports and briefs to senior management.
•    Strong interpersonal skills, which are used to effectively influence and negotiate on environmental regulatory matters at a regional and national level.
