What we do:

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it’s so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water, 24/7, 365 days a year, to the end of this century and beyond. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region’s health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry.

Where you fit in:

As our Carbon Emissions Reduction Manager, you’ll work with our operational teams and capital programmes across water and wastewater to collaboratively deliver greenhouse gas emission reductions. A particular emphasis of the role will be on Scope 3 emissions up and down our value chain, and development and validation of carbon removals both carbon insets and offsets.

Reporting to the Manager of Net Zero Carbon, you will play an essential role in ensuring the business becomes a leader in carbon management and can deliver its commitments to achieve carbon neutrality for operational carbon emissions by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050 across all Scopes of emissions.

The role will work alongside our Carbon Accounting and Reporting Manager and use data and management information to focus and drive cultural change, strategic partnerships, and funded emission reduction programmes.

Key Responsibilities of the role are as follows:

  • Working with the Manager of Net Zero Carbon and other internal stakeholders to refine our costed carbon emission reduction plans.
  • Ensuring we stay on our emission reduction/transition pathway while managing short- and long-term risks and opportunities (e.g., growth, demand reduction, more stringent legal requirements, and resilience to climate change).
  • Engaging operational teams (in water, wastewater, procurement, learning and development etc) and capital teams and contract partners in the identification, selection, and delivery of emission reduction programmes and low carbon solutions including operational, embedded (capital and purchased goods) and wider value chain scope 3 emission reductions.
  • Developing and/or identifying effective carbon removals (carbon insets as a priority to reduce reliance on carbon offsets). Working with internal teams on woodland creation and peatland restoration, and wider partners on broader opportunities for carbon reduction or removal.
  • Establishing a credible carbon offset strategy for residual emissions.
  • Participating in regional/national networks to share our plans, learn from latest developments and shape the water industry best practice in carbon management.
  • Serving as technical secretary for our Net Zero Carbon Committee
  • Continually developing knowledge to become a subject matter expert on sustainability data with particular emphasis on carbon management. Using this knowledge to provide specialist advice and to raise awareness and drive performance across our business.

What skills & qualifications and attributes you will need:

  •  A passion for sustainability and strong desire to deliver change in a planned and cost-effective manner.
  • Ability to use a blend of systems thinking and solution analysis to support decision making on options for decarbonisation.
  • Ability to take ownership for driving reduction of carbon hotspots, and to engage effectively with colleagues across the business to identify and deliver cost-effective solutions and support the creation of costed plans for rapid carbon emission reduction.
  • Knowledge and experience carbon management and best practice approaches to delivery of net zero carbon emissions.
  • Understanding of wider value determination such as six capitals accounting to help build/support a business case for investment.
  • Strong written and verbal presentation skills, with proven ability to analyse and package data, reports and plans in ways that are accessible to different audiences.
  •  Ability to engage and influence colleagues at all levels of authority.
